Slovakia - Tatras

Nizne Matejkovo:
Our adventure began in the peaceful haven of Nizne Matejkovo, where we stayed at Romco’s rustic cabin, a charming chata nestled deep in the woods. The moment we arrived, we felt the stress of the city melt away, replaced by the soothing sounds of nature. Surrounded by dense forests and rolling hills, this was the perfect escape from the sweltering heat of Bratislava. Each morning, we woke up to the crisp, fresh air and set out to explore the lush surroundings.
One of our favorite activities was renting e-mountain bikes, which allowed us to effortlessly navigate the rugged trails that crisscrossed the area. The thrill of biking through the forest, with the wind in our hair and the scent of pine in the air, was unforgettable. But the adventure didn’t stop there. We also indulged in a local tradition—a halusky-making competition. With flour flying and laughter echoing through the cabin, we attempted to master the art of this classic Slovak dish. The results? Let’s just say we won in enthusiasm if not in culinary skill!
Krubinska:
A short drive from Nizne Matejkovo brought us to Krubinska, a hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts. We began our day with a scenic lift ride up the mountain, which offered sweeping views of the valley below. As we ascended, the landscape transformed into a vibrant tapestry of green, with mountain bike trails weaving their way through the terrain. These trails are a haven for bikers, offering various levels of difficulty to suit all adventurers.
At the summit, we took our time to explore the surroundings, walking along the ridge and taking in the stunning panoramic views. The peak was a peaceful spot, perfect for snapping photos and soaking up the serene atmosphere. Of course, no mountain adventure is complete without a cold drink, so we found a cozy spot to enjoy a well-deserved beer, savoring the moment before making our way back down. Krubinska was the ideal blend of excitement and relaxation, offering something for everyone.
Smrekovica:
Our journey continued to Smrekovica, a remote mountain area known for its pristine natural beauty. The drive up was a visual treat, with winding roads leading us through dense forests and past fields bursting with wildflowers. Although we didn’t stay overnight, we made the most of our visit by exploring the area around the hotel, which is perched on a high plateau surrounded by breathtaking vistas.
The scenery at Smrekovica is nothing short of spectacular. Rolling meadows stretch out in every direction, dotted with a riot of colorful wildflowers swaying gently in the breeze. We took a leisurely walk through this idyllic landscape, breathing in the fresh mountain air and marveling at the untouched beauty that surrounded us. Before leaving, we stopped at the hotel’s restaurant, where we enjoyed a delicious meal while taking in the view. Smrekovica felt like a well-kept secret, a place where time slows down, and nature takes center stage.
Korytnica:
Our exploration took an unexpected turn when we stumbled upon Korytnica, an abandoned spa complex hidden deep in the woods. Once a luxurious retreat frequented by European aristocrats, Korytnica Spa is now a haunting relic of the past. As we approached, the grand buildings, now crumbling and overgrown, stood as silent witnesses to the spa's former glory.
Walking through the deserted streets, we could almost imagine the days when Korytnica was alive with the sounds of visitors seeking wellness and relaxation. The spa was renowned for its mineral springs, believed to have healing properties, attracting people from far and wide. Today, nature is slowly reclaiming the site, with vines creeping up the walls and trees growing through the once-elegant structures. There’s a haunting beauty in the decay, a sense of history frozen in time.
We spent some time exploring the abandoned buildings, each with its own story to tell. The peeling paint, broken windows, and faded signs all hinted at the opulence that once defined this place. Korytnica was a poignant reminder of the transient nature of human endeavors, offering a unique and somewhat eerie glimpse into a bygone era.
